Final at IWETT - Successful project closure in Seville
Final at IWETT - Inland Waterway use of EGNOS for Tracking and Tracing: On Friday, 13 December 2024 the project partners
from Germany, Hungary and Spain met at the final event in the historical setting of the Autoridad Portuaria de Sevilla to present the results
of the project after two years of work.
The project, funded by the EU Space Programme Agency (EUSPA), aimed to provide data from the European Geostationary Navigation
Overlay Service (EGNOS), which was originally developed for aviation, via River Information Services (RIS). This application was trialled at
three European locations: the Spree-Oder waterway in Berlin-Brandenburg, the Danube in Hungary and the River Guadalquivir in Spain.
To transmit the EGNOS corrections via the AIS and VDES services used in maritime navigation, the project partners expanded their land-based
infrastructures with software and hardware solutions from Alberding GmbH, among others. The Alberding SmartTrack software was used to generate
the EGNOS-based corrections, check their integrity and prepare them for transmission.
In addition, Alberding GmbH developed software for the automated processing and analysis of the measurement campaign data.
Another key milestone was the realisation of a prototype for the Inland Multi-System Shipborne Receiver (I-MSR) developed during the project
by Alberding GmbH. This innovative user terminal enables reliable and robust determination of position, speed, course and time and thus offers
a future-proof solution for existing and future on-board applications.
The IWETT project impressively demonstrates how satellite-based technologies can contribute to the digitalisation and modernisation of inland
navigation - with a clear focus on safety, efficiency and sustainability.
